Prisoner Movement and In-Court Management Services

Ventia Australia Pty Ltd has been awarded the contract for the transportation of prisoners and management of prisoners in court commencing 1 August 2021. This contract is administered by DCS on behalf of participating agencies.

The contract provides for the movement of prisoners between prisons, courts, police stations and health services and the management of prisoners in court. The contract does not include the transfer of prisoners with a High1 Security classification (these are managed by DCS).

Mount Gambier Prison

Mount Gambier Prison is privately managed and operated by G4S Custodial Services Pty Ltd.

The South Australian Government owns the land on which the prison is located and also owns all plant and equipment and facility infrastructure at the prison.

The department partners with G4S Custodial Services Pty Ltd (under a single supplier contract) for the management and operation of the prison, which caters for Medium and Low Security sentenced and remand prisoners.

G4S Custodial Services Pty Ltd (G4S) provides all services for the management and operation of the prison, including but not limited to:

  • prisoner security and management (including assessment, case and sentence management)
  • prisoner programs, education and prison industrial programs
  • centre security (including perimeter security)
  • prisoner services (including food services)
  • staff training and accreditation
  • maintenance of the physical infrastructure.

Depending on security classification and regimes to be applied, the prisoners may be accommodated in Low Security cottage style units or High Security cellblock units.

Electronic Monitoring of offenders

The department utilises Electronic Monitoring predominantly for the supervision of offenders on Home Detention and for those on Intensive Bail Supervision (or ‘Home Detention Bail’).

DCS leases electronic monitoring equipment via a contract with G4S. The equipment has GPS capability, and has capability to monitor offenders in the community.
