Prisoners in hospital

The department will only notify the prisoner's emergency contact if the medical team looking after the prisoner provides information that the circumstances are of a very serious or terminal nature. Otherwise it is the responsibility of the prisoner to inform their friends and family that they are in hospital.

Prisoner mail

All incoming and outgoing mail will be processed and issued to the prisoner as per standard procedures.

Mail should be addressed to the prisoner at the prison they would normally be located.

Mail should not be sent to the hospital address.

Telephone calls

The general manager has discretion to approve phone calls depending on the prisoner's condition and any other compassionate considerations.

Prisoners must have sufficient funds in their prison accounts to cover the costs of any telephone calls charged by the hospital.

Phone calls are limited to a maximum of 10 minutes.

Prisoners in hospital are not allowed mobile phones.

Hospital visits

The general manager has discretion to approve visits depending on the prisoner's condition and any other compassionate considerations.

All visitors must be on the prisoners Nominated Visitor List.

All visits must take place during normal hospital visiting hours and are limited to a maximum of 40 minutes [unless specific approval is given by the General Manager].

All visitors must have photo ID and it will be checked prior to the visit.

Visitors must not give the prisoner any item during the visit unless approved by the prison’s General Manager. This includes food and drink.

The use of mobile phones by visitors during the visit is strictly prohibited and will result in immediate termination of the visit.
